What is the TLCA?

            The Toyota Land Cruiser Association was founded in 1976 in an effort to bring together Land Cruiser enthusiasts within North America. Since then, it has expanded to a world-wide organization that attracts and encourages any and all Toyota 4 wheel drive owners. The club caters to all walks of life and encourages family participation, responsible and safe offroad driving as well as supporting the greatest vehicle ever made: the Toyota Land Cruiser!
            So just what do you get as a member? Most people claim the best part of membership is the Toyota Trails magazine. This is a full-color magazine that brings articles about all aspects of Land Cruisers and Toyota trucks. It has everything from serious tech articles and tech forums to fiction and trip reports. This is not a “Bill and Ted’s backyard copier” sort of publication. My friend, Todd Kaderback, edits it with the help of generous members who contribute both pictures and articles. Your membership dues and my advertising dollar makes this publication happen. You will wait for it every other month. Believe it or not, back issues are valuable!
            The Toyota Trails also contains a list of associate member businesses. I am one as are many other vendors and shops. Having the associate members directory is like a yellow pages for the Land Cruiser.
            There are other benefits as a member. You get a sticker and a dash plaque. Hokey you think? Just wait until you are at a gas station in Butt Iowa, at dawn, out of gas and a voice asks, "Are you TLCA?" It has happened to me. It is a way of telling other cruiser owners you are a member. Actually this is more than a club, it is an extended family.
            One of the best things you get as a member is access to TLCA events. They are more or less year round and all over North America. A TLCA sanctioned event will be well-organized and safe both for you and your family. I strongly encourage all of you to attend some of the events. We go to many each year.
            The TLCA is the umbrella club for many local clubs. Through the TLCA club directory you can find local clubs in almost every city in North America. Go to a local meeting; you will be glad you did.          
            What is TLCA to me? I really feel it is a part of my family. I have had fights with it over the years but I am firmly back in the fold. I know that no matter where I am in North America, if I can get to a phone or a computer I can find a friend. Many of us only know each other through the internet or the occasional TLCA event but that, combined with our obsession, is enough. The most fascinating thing to me are the people involved and the range of knowledge and talents. This is not a group of drunken red necks banging their trucks up on the rocks; except for the guys from Texas and Mississippi!
            I have met at least 10 lawyers (sorry), a few doctors, a district attorney, many policemen, 2 FBI agents, 2 guys that make nuclear bombs, a sheriff, many military people, lots of stoners, more than a few drunks, a mortgage fraud investigator, many auto shop owners and workers, lots of computer nerds, 2 water engineers, a specialty boat manufacture, nurses, real estate agents, janitors and just about every type of job you can imagine. Where else can you go out and not only enjoy your truck but enjoy the company of such a diverse crowd of people?
