Toyota transfer cases are almost bombproof but they do wear. More
often than not the strange whine you hear once in a while is the idler
shaft in the case. Every case with over 200K on it needs to be
rebuilt. As long as it shifts from HI to LOW with no problem and you
can live with the noise ignore it until you have a need to pull the
tranny for a clutch job or motor swap. Once it is out the rebuild is
not all that involved.
- New bearings
- New seals
- New gaskets
- New idler shaft
- Case sandblasted and painted
- Flanges checked for grooves on sealing surface
- All gears checked
Normally the gears are fine and the bearings and shaft are bad.
We check the case for any cracks or imperfections.
The case is filled with Mobil 1 80w-90 Synthetic Fluid.
