Steering:
Cruisers are big and heavy; even on their best day they do not steer like a race car! Steering is an issue with almost every FJ40/55/60/62 we see in the shop. So far the 80 series, with beefier joints and rods, seem to be holding up well and require little replacement. The quality and accuracy of the steering is based on the steering components, tires, the gear box, the front axle, the suspension and the frame geometry. We can address each issue and get you steering better than new.
40/55 Series:
The 40 and 55 have about the most complicated steering set up that Toyota could come up with. The idea was to introduce multiple points to prevent the movement of the tire when it hits an object being translated back into the steering gear and then into the steering wheel. This works great and helps prevent wear on the gear box itself. We rarely see gear boxes worn out; generally the seal starts leaking and the box runs dry. Next thing you know it is time for a rebuilt box!
- Rebuild of an original OEM box to OEM specs
- $450
- labor to remove install on a truck by truck basis
- The joints wear over time and the center arm becomes out of adjustment. We have tried all the assorted aftermarket crap and we keep coming back to Toyota parts. We replace all rods, joints, ends, clamps with new OEM then we rebuild your center arm and pitman joint then install a new rag joint. Once all that is done we have it aligned. Your FJ 40/55 will steer like new!
- Replace/rebuild steering components
- $625
- Above installed and aligned included in price shown.
FJ 60/62:
We see a lot of these trucks and the steering is bad on most of them. There are some points of adjustment in the relay rod ends but generally we find ourselves replacing the entire mess. As always, we have found OEM parts to be the best bet.
The gear boxes of 60/62 have an annoying tendency to leak at the bottom oil seal. This need to be fixed! The box and PS system will run dry and you will be in for a GIANT repair!
- Rebuild of an original OEM box to OEM specs
- $525
- Labor to remove install on a truck by truck basis
- The power steering system on just about everything Toyota
makes uses ATF not power steering fluid. It is amazing how many trucks
have ps fluid in the system. This is not good! See
http://www.urbanlandcruisers.com/products/fluids.html#steering for
more info. We often replace the pumps with new OEM parts. Plan on
around $450 installed for this.
- The tie rod and relay rod ends wear over time. if you maintain these by greasing them and replacing the rubber boots they will last a long time. Most people don't do that and we replace a lot of them. We buy everything new from Mr. Toyota and install all of it then we have your truck aligned. It is amazing how much better it will steer!
- Replace/rebuild steering components
- $575
- Above installed and aligned included in price shown.
power
steering:
It is the single best thing you can do to your FJ 40 or FJ 55. There are 2 basic methods of installing power steering on our truck. The first is Saginaw and the 2nd is Toyota mini truck. There are good and bad points about both.
- The Saginaw system uses a power steering gear from General Motors. The gear mounts outboard of the ft frame crosmember just in back of the bumper. The spud shaft on the box runs up to a long slip shaft that connects to the firewall. The pitman arm connects to a custom drag link that connects to the stock tie rod end. The pump is located on the driver’s side in the normal location of the smog pump. On some later applications the pump can be a stock Toyota pump. On F motors with the alternator the driver’s side it will be relocated to the passenger side like the 2F set up.
The primary advantage of the Saginaw system is the power and simplicity of it. You can easily turn 40” tires with it; usually with only a finger or two! The box comes in different ratios of turn the smaller the ratio the quicker it turns. Quick turns are great off road but can be “twitchy” on the hwy. We can install a larger ratio which will allow excellent hwy use and good off road use. The Saginaw system, no matter how well set up, will always limit the amount of turn to the left. Usually this is not an issue for most customers. One of the drawbacks to the system is the location of the box. It is located far forward and can be exposed to damage from rocks. Many people cut the ft cross member to locate the box. We drill and sleeve a hole to preserve the integrity of the cross member. There is a welded mounting plate on the frame rail. In extreme situations with a poor install the frame can twist the frame rail or break the welds. Often, the ft bumper and winch mount will need to be modified to fit the gear box correctly. The installation is involved and must be done correctly for safety.
- The mini truck power steering is a very simple, OEM, system. We remove your existing manual gear box and mount. It is replaced with a custom mount and a mid 80s Toyota Mini truck gear box. The existing linkage is used and the system is powered by either a Saginaw style pump, a mini truck pump or an OEM pump in the same locations as listed above. When using tires up to 35”, in all situations, this is the better way for most people to go. The system “feels” right in all situations. There are no issues with highway use vs. off-road use. It does not provide the same amount of assist as the Saginaw system. It does provide more than enough assist for most applications. One drawback to the system is that it retains all of the original links in the OEM system. Generally, those links are worn and will need to be replaced during the conversion. If your links and center arm are in good shape you can avoid this additional cost. Another advantage is that the system “looks” stock. Once the system is running normal maintence will ensure a very long life.
We recommend the Saginaw system to customers running large tires (35” or over), driving in extreme terrain or for those who plan on using the truck off-road the majority of the time. The remaining 80% of our customers are very happy with the mini truck system. The mini truck system cannot be used on trucks with a 350 conversion due to the location of the exhaust manifolds. We run both systems on our own trucks and can point you in the right direction for your needs.
Pricing:
The Saginaw system usually runs around $1900 using all new parts to include the gear box. Occasionally extra time will be charged for fabrication if the bumper system requires major modifications.*
The mini truck system is $1450 without the addition of tie rod ends and center arm rebuild. With the additional work plan on $1850. We use a hi quality used OEM gear box that is rebuilt and all other parts are new.*
We recommend the addition of a power steering cooler on both systems.
$95 additional.
* 9/72 and older can be outfitted with either system. The Saginaw will require an additional $175 for the firewall modifications required. We can retain the early style steering column and turn signals.
Warranty:
With either system the pump is warranted for 12 months. The power
steering system itself is warranted for 24 months.
WE DO NOT SELL EITHER SYSTEM AS KITS. WE PROVIDE FULL INSTALLATION
ONLY. Please contact us for additional
info.
Tires:
Tires are really important. Don't skimp on your tires, don't install crappy, cheepo tires just cuz they are on sale and never, ever, for any reason buy Pro-Comp tires; ever. Did you get that part about the Pro-Comps?
We are not a tire shop and we do not sell tires but we deal with tires all the time. To save you money and to make out life easier just buy your tires and have them shipped or delivered to us. We can help you with size requirements prior to the purchase. Usually E-Bay, Sams Club and Wal Mart have the best deals. We are big fans of Toyo, Michelin, BF Goodrich and GoodYear. We have an excellent tire shop local to us and we can have your tires mounted and balanced while your truck is in for other service. We usually charge $18 per tire for this service. We reserve the right to not install tires that we think are crap!
